Jewish Museum to present Lincoln era music, poetry

To conclude the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial, the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach presents “Music and Poetry of Lincoln’s Time” on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The concert, organized and led by South Florida clarinetist Paul Green, includes a narration about Lincoln’s relationship to the Jews, music of Lincoln’s time that he liked, musical tributes to Lincoln after his death, a recitation of Emma Lazarus’ poem inspired by Lincoln that is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, selection of patriotic songs written by American Jewish composers in the first half of the 20th century, and concluding with an arrangement of portions of Aaron Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait,” performed by the FIU Wind Ensemble.

Green is principal clarinetist of the Miami City Ballet Orchestra, the Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and the Atlantic Classical Orchestra. He is also a member of the faculties of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, and Florida International University in Miami, where he teaches clarinet performance and chamber music.

The Museum, housed in two adjacent restored buildings that were once a synagogue for Miami’s first Jewish congregation, is located at 301 Washington Ave., South Beach,.

Admission to the concert is $18/person for Museum members; $25/person for non-members. For reservations, coal 305-672-5044, ext. 3175.
