Hadassah
Membership brunch: The Ameet Chapter of Hadassah will hold a membership brunch, Bagels ’n Blintz, honoring life members on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 12:30 p.m., featuring The Happy Hoofers dance troupe. The event will be at Diplomat Condominiums, 2611 Bayshore Blvd. Tampa. Cost is $10 per person. Your check is your reservation. Cancer talk: The Brandon Chai group of Hadassah invites the community to hear Debbie Sokolov, director of development for FORCE (Facing our Risk of Cancer Empowered) on Monday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. at Congregation Beth Shalom, 706 Bryan Road, Brandon. Sokolov has been featured in Newsweek, Walk magazine, and has appeared on Good Day Tampa Bay. She and her sister were found to carry the BRCA gene which has implications for Jewish women in contracting breast and ovarian cancer. She and her mother are both cancer survivors. BBYO
Karaoke time: The Bnai Brith Youth Organization is forming a Tampa chapter and will hold its first major event, a karaoke night, on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Ohev Shalom in New Tampa. BBYO is an internationally recognized group for Jewish high school teens. This local group has also invited eighth graders to participate this year to help the chapter get off the ground. Membership is open to all, regardless of affiliation or synagogue membership. There will be no charge to attend and light refreshments will be served. Genealogy Society
Find your roots: The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay will offer a two-ses- sion seminar titled: “The JGSTB 2010 Guide to Jewish Genealogy Research: A Foundation for Beginners and an Update for Experienced Researchers” on Sunday, Feb. 14, and Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd., Clearwater. Registration will be at 1:30 p.m. on both dates. Instructor Dr. Emil H. Isaccson, who has 25 years experience in genealogy research, will focus on developing proper approaches and the necessary tools, techniques and short cuts to effectively connect with ancestors.
The course is free to paid-up members. A one-year family membership will be included in the $25 course fee for non-members. An additional $10 fee will be charged per family for seminar materials. To pre-register for the class or for further information, call Sally Israel at (727) 343-1652.
Generations After
Making plans: Generations After, a group for children and adult grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, will meet on Friday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Florida Holocaust Museum, 55 5th St. S., St. Petersburg, to plan the annual Survivors’ Luncheon March 7. The group also will receive an overview of the One by One trip to Berlin that will bring together descendants of Holocaust Survivors and the Third Reich. Support Groups
Grief support: A bereavement support group focusing on the Jewish process of grief will meet on Mondays, beginning on Jan. 25 from noon to 1 p.m. at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd, Clearwater, for five weeks. The group will be led by Renee Baseman, M.A. A $15 donation to Gulf Coast’s food pantry or a donation of $15 worth of food is requested. Alzheimer’s Group: The Alzheimer’s Support Group meets the first Thursday of the month from 4-5 p.m. at Menorah Manor in St. Petersburg. Facilitated by

Adult Children of Alcoholics: ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) is a 12-Step, 12-Tradition program for women and men who grew up in alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional homes.
