Obituaries

STEVEN R. LOEWENTHAL, P.A., 36, of Tampa, died Jan. 16. He was born in Los Angeles, and moved to Tampa 16 years ago from Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of the University of Tampa and Stetson Law School. He was in private practice in Tampa for over 10 years as a criminal defense attorney and family law. Survivors include his parents, Martha and Bill Loewenthal, Tampa; sister and brother-in-law, Drs. Barbara and David Podwall, Great Neck, NY; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Linda Loewenthal, San Mateo, CA. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Tampa General Hospital Foundation. ALBERT MARKOVITZ, retired colonel, 82, of Kendal, died Jan. 20. Born in Havana, Cuba, he grew up in Tampa, and attended Congregation Rodeph Sholom where he had his Bar Mitzvah. He graduated with a BA from the University of Florida and an MS degree in public administration from Florida State University. He was founding brother of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, Phi Gamma Chapter at the University of Florida. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy and in 1951 received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant, Transportation Corps, U.S. Army Reserve. His 33-year military career included assignments in Korea and the Pentagon. He was a member of Congregation Bet Breira SamuEl OrOlom, the Reserve Officers Association, the Military Officers Association of America and the L.I.F.T. Senior Center in Kendall. He was active with AARP. Survivors include, his wife, Marlis; children; Michelle, Ralph and Annette; sister, Helene Markovitz; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. (Lakeside Memorial Park)

PAUL SCHWARTZ, 95, of Tampa, died Jan. 17. Born in Tampa, he graduated from Plant High School and then attended Duke University and the University of Tampa. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and led the first daylight-bombing raid over Berlin. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Clusters and Presidential Unit Citation. At the age of 28, he was the youngest colonel commissioned in the U.S. Air Force. In 1946 after serving as Base Commander at McCoy Air Force Base in Orlando, he retired to MacDill Air Force Reserves with the rank of full Colonel. He started Concrete Products Company and Amcon Concrete, which were later sold to Tarmac Roadstone. He was a member of Congregation Schaarai Zedek, Palma Ceia Country Club and Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Carol Schwartz Funk and her husband Charles Funk and Nancy Schwartz Tropp and her husband Robert A. Tropp; three grandchildren, two step grandsons and one great-grandson. The family suggests memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. (Blount Curry MacDill Funeral Home)
