DR. GILBERT KUSHNER,
DR. GILBERT KUSHNER, 76, of Tampa, died May 30. He was born in Bronx, NY and spent his early childhood in Israel, then returned to New York where he attended school, graduated from Bronx High School of Science and obtained his Bachelor of Arts from City College of New York in 1954. After serving in the U.S. Army, he attended the University of Arizona receiving his PhD in Anthropology and became an instructor at the University of Houston, and then Associate Professor at the State University of New York College at Brockport prior to moving to Tampa in 1970 and joining the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Florida. He served as Chairperson from 1971 to 1985 and Associate Dean in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences from 1971 to 1978. He retired and was named Professor Emeritus in 1999 and received the Sol Tax Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Applied Anthropology in 2005. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Lorraine; two sons, Andrew and David; two daughters-in-law, Shelley and Sue; sister, Esther; three granddaughters. The family suggests memorials be made to LifePath Hospice or Congregation Rodeph Sholom Tzedakah Fund. (Segal Funeral Home, Beth David Chapel)
