A cappela group concert to honor late Rabbi Treiser

Rabbi Daniel Treiser Rabbi Daniel Treiser A community concert featuring the professional Jewish a cappella group Tizmoret will be held on Monday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. at Temple B’nai Israel to pay tribute to the Clearwater congregation’s late Rabbi Daniel Treiser.

Tizmoret, which means orchestra in Hebrew, is based at the Hillel organization at Queen’s College, the same college Rabbi Treiser graduated from in 1993. The group draws singers from colleges throughout the New York City area and has taken Jewish collegiate a cappella to the next level, performing classic Jewish melodies, American pop music and contemporary Israeli tunes.

Tizmoret has produced seven CDs, as well as two Eps, and has performed for college campuses, countless b’nai-mitzvah and synagogues, and various music festivals across the Eastern United States. They won the 5th annual Long Island College A Cappella Challenge in 2010, annually tour the East Coast and beyond, performed in Italy at a New Year’s party and at the annual White House Hanukkah party in 2014.

Tizmoret, an award-winning a cappella group from Queens College, will perform at Temple B’nai Israel in Clearwater on Jan. 21. Tizmoret, an award-winning a cappella group from Queens College, will perform at Temple B’nai Israel in Clearwater on Jan. 21. The group also won the first annual Philadelphia Jewish Collegiate A Cappella Competition in 2017 and won Kol HaOlam (the National Jewish Collegiate A Cappella Competition) in 2011, 2012, and 2015. The group has been nominated for Religious

Group of the Year at the 2018 A cappella Music Awards.

Members of Tizmoret have varied backgrounds and interests with majors from neuropsychology to political science. One of the female members admits to being able to recite every line from The Office, while a male member interested in a medical career has started an organization that sings for hospitalized patients.

The concert is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Pinellas and Pasco Counties.

When Federation’s Director of Arts, Culture and Education, Maxine Kaufman, heard that the a cappella group was coming to Florida for their January tour, she said it seemed like a perfect way to pay tribute to Rabbi Treiser.

The rabbi served Temple B’nai Israel as their spiritual leader for 10 years until his death in August at age 46 after a battle with cancer. He was the driving force behind the community concert held in Pinellas County in 2016 featuring the Maccabeats.

Originally from Queens, Rabbi Treiser earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Queen’s College before going on to Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles where he received a master’s in Hebrew Letters and HUC – Jewish Institute of Religion in New York from which he was ordained in 2000.

Prior to joining Temple B’nai Israel, he was associate rabbi at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El in Plantation. Within the community, Rabbi Treiser was a member and former president of the Pinellas County Board of Rabbis and served for many years on the board of SEACCAR, the South East Association of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

In addition to honoring Rabbi Treiser, the Jan. 21 concert will coincide with the festival of Tu B’Shevat – the New Year for the Trees.

Tickets are available at www.jewishpinellas.org at a cost of $5. They will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The temple is located at 1685 S. Belcher Road, Clearwater.
