Genealogy Society

Genetic genealogy: A live genealogy webinar will he held at the next meeting of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Tampa Bay on Sunday, May 19 at 1:30 p.m. at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd., Clearwater. The session will focus on how to read, understand, and use genetic genealogy test results. Registration will be at 1:30 p.m. and test kits will be available at a special price for individuals attending this meeting. The webinar begins at 2 p.m.

The presenter will be Elise Friedman, a professional genealogist, specializing in Jewish genealogy, genetic genealogy, and technology. She works as a consultant for Family Tree DNA, volunteers as JewishGen’s DNA projects coordinator and serves as volunteer administrator for several DNA projects.

Hadassah

Genetic disease presentation: The Tampa Ameet Chapter of Hadassah will meet on Tuesday, May 21 from 7-9 p.m. at Congregation Kol Ami, 3919 Moran Road, Tampa. Dr. Karen Ezrine, National Hadassah Physicians Council chair, will present “It’s in the Genes,” a program on detecting Jewish genetic diseases. Everyone is welcome and is encouraged to wear jeans. Closing luncheon: The Chai Chapter of Hadassah will hold its closing luncheon in Sun City Center on Tuesday, May 21 at noon. Banquet Masters will cater a lunch buffet with a choice of two hot entrees and a comic will provide entertainment. The cost is $18. Honoring vets: The Jewish War Veterans Post 373 will be collecting donations at several Publix markets throughout the Tampa Bay area in May. On May 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., they will be at Publix markets at Sun City Center, Westgate Shopping Center, Westchase and Carrollwood Square on Ehrlich Road. On May 27 from 10 a.m. to noon they will be at the Publix markets in Bloomingdale Shopping Center and in Wesley Chapel on County Road 581.

The post also plans to place American flags on the graves of fallen servicemen and women on Memorial Day.

Seniors

Jet Setters North: This seniors group will meet on Thursday, May 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a tea party. There will be an informational or entertaining program, followed by lunch and socializing time, games to play, and a Yiddish speaking group. Seniors are asked to register in advance. The meeting is free.

Preserve your memories: Learn to write stories about your past and events that shaped your life to pass on to loved ones and the community. Rachel Tilow will lead the private sessions on Tuesdays, at 10 a.m. at the JCC or by appointment on Wednesday afternoons at Jewish Center Towers, 3008 De Leon St. in south Tampa. Students don’t have to be talented writers – a voice recording will be made and later printed. Each 30-minute session is $5 for JCC or JetSetters members and $10 for non-members. One free session is offered for the first five people to sign up. Pre-registration required

Game play: The JCC Senior Lounge is open for all ages to join together and play canasta, mah jongg, or other games every Friday from 1-4 p.m. at no charge.

New discussion group: Pat Renfroe will lead a new discussion group that focuses on current events on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the senior lounge. There is no charge.

Mah jongg lessons: Learn mah jongg with lessons every Tuesday through June 11 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.

Support group

Alzheimer’s caregivers: Menorah Manor’s Bresler Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Program offers a complimentary support group open to the community. This group meets in the Samson Nursing Center at Menorah Manor, 255 59th St. N., St. Petersburg, on the first Thursday of the month from 3:30-5 p.m. For more information, call Gwen Kaldenberg, MSW, director of the Bresler Program, at (727) 302- 3750.
